Around 50 cars have been marked with what seems to be blood from a person in the German town of Hanau close to Frankfurt, police confirm authorities.
Cars, building surfaces and mailboxes were vandalized, in some cases with swastikas, they reported in a release.
Officers report they were alerted during the night on Wednesday evening, when a resident observed that a car in the Lamboy district of Hanau had been marked with a reddish fluid.
The liquid had been drawn in the pattern of a banned symbol, they reported.
Police then located numerous other marked automobiles and residential walls in the adjacent neighborhood.
Nazi symbols are banned in Germany under legislation prohibiting the visible presentation of Nazi symbols.
Law enforcement say preliminary tests show the substance was likely blood from a person.
"At present there remains no clue as to its source; investigators are presently not informed of any injuries in connection with the event," they added.
Municipal representatives announced they were attempting "to unravel the case" and have appealed to the residents for details.
A high-ranking representative stated the vandalism made him without words and required to be addressed quickly.
"This act strikes at the very heart of Hanau and revives the pain of the extremist terrorist attack in 2020," he posted on online, referring to the death of nine victims by a shooter focusing on individuals of immigrant origin in 2020.
