EU Might Retaliate to ‘Unwarranted’ US Travel Restrictions, Official States

The European Union might “respond swiftly and decisively” against what it calls “unjustified” travel bans imposed by the United States on five Europeans working on fighting online hate and misinformation, a European Commission spokesperson has said.

EU Officials Condemn US Move as ‘Coercion’

European leaders including the French president accused Washington of “bullying and threats”, after the visa restrictions were placed on individuals who have been at the heart of efforts to introduce legislation regulating American tech companies.

“For far too long, European activists have led organised efforts to coerce American platforms to suppress US perspectives they disagree with,” wrote a senior US official online. “The current administration will not stand for these egregious acts of censorship beyond its borders.”

Broad Criticism From EU Nations

Germany, Spain, the UK and a chorus of EU officials joined France in criticizing the move.

The restrictions were enacted this week on a former EU commissioner who helped draft the bloc’s Digital Services Act (DSA), as well as four anti-disinformation campaigners, including two in Germany and two in the UK.

An Escalating Conflict Over Regulation

The DSA is seen by Washington as a type of speech restriction, while EU authorities contend the rules are essential to combat inflammatory language and disinformation.
