UEFA has opened a disciplinary case against Chelsea's the Portuguese international after he pushed over a young stadium attendant during a Champions League match against Paris St‑Germain.
The Portugal international, Pedro Neto, shoved the attendant during added time of Wednesday's last-16 first leg at Parc des Princes – where his team suffered a 5-2 – which caused him to fall off a stool.
The incident triggered a heated exchange between players from both teams.
The governing body confirmed the case has been opened against the player for "unsporting behaviour" under the official rules.
"Disciplinary officials will take a decision regarding this matter at a later date," European football's governing body added in its statement.
Neto apologised for the incident and blamed being caught up "in the intensity of the match" as he tried to regain possession of the ball.
"I'm not like this. Emotions were running high and I want to apologise. My shirt was given to him. I deeply regret it - an apology is necessary," Neto explained to broadcasters.
"I don't speak French well, and [Portugal team-mate] Vitinha came over and told him that it was a momentary lapse.
"Eventually he accepted the apology and I presented him with my jersey and said sorry many times. He understood what had happened and was content with the situation."
Chelsea host Paris St-Germain next Tuesday for the return fixture, after a match against Newcastle at their home ground this weekend in domestic competition.
